The latest clashes between supporters of President Salva Kiir and his vice-president and former rebel leader Riek Machar became more intense on Sunday July 10th, and the death toll was heavily revised upwards. The fighting began in the morning and continued until about 8 p.m. local time, when a large thunderstorm seemed to put a damper on the violence, said United Nations mission spokeswoman Shantal Persaud. The Treasury Department, imposing its first human rights sanctions on any North Korean official, designated them on a list of people whose assets are frozen and who are barred from transactions with any US citizen. The blacklist names 10 people other than Kim, and five government institutions involved in monitoring ordinary North Koreans and keeping an estimated 80,000 to 120,000 people in camps for political prisoners. It weakened after making landfall and by Saturday morning, it was downgraded to a tropical storm and was making its way toward China's Fujian Province. Nepartak has faded into a tropical depression, but will continue to bring wind and rain to provinces including Jiangxi and Zhejiang. With this the death toll in the recent heavy rains and floods in China mounted to 172 while about 40 people still remain unaccounted for. (more...)
