Both officers were transported to John Peter Smith hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. That man had been shot in the head. They were told a witness to the shooting may be in the shed in the backyard. Police originally said it appeared someone had shot the man but now believe it may have been self-inflicted. The gunman ambushed a police officer, shooting her about eight times. Police said they may still be on the lookout for another suspect. Later, he grabbed a woman and used her as a human shield . According to Dave Schratwieser, the UPenn officer is a retired Philadelphia Police officer. Officers in the area heard the gunshots and began to chase the shooter, Ross said. (more...)

People posted on social media that they heard a "very loud explosion" in the area. Gov. Chris Christie has been briefed on the incident, Porrino said. "When it went off, there was nobody in the area", Della Fave said. If not for the delay "there probably would have been a good number of people running past" at the time of the explosion, he said. Unemployment has not been as low as 3.9 percent in the Bay State since August 2001, before the September 11 terrorist attacks.
