Ransomware WannaCry to attack Indian banking system soon: Cyber expert

The report said that in China, more than 29,000 IPs were infected by the virus from Friday to Saturday, most of which were universities, hospitals , transport systems and companies. One of the infection vectors in WannaCry is apparently a module that exploits a vulnerability (MS17-010) in Windows and uses a worm component to spread within a network. (more...)

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said on Saturday that "The #aeCERT team in the TRA said that so far we have not received any e-government services cases that are affected by the virus". The country's banking system was also attacked, although no problems were detected, as was the railway system. As a loose global network of cybersecurity experts fought a rearguard battle against ransomware hackers, officials and experts on Sunday urged organizations and companies to update ... (more...)

Alibaba's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at 4.35 yuan ($0.63), below estimates of 4.48 yuan.The company's shares listed in NY were marked down 3.6 percent to $116.6 in pre-market trading.Revenue from digital media and entertainment businesses surged 234 percent to 3.9 billion yuan, reflecting the dividends from the consolidation of Youku Tudou, the video streaming platform Alibaba acquired for $3.5 billion in October. Microsoft distributed the patch two months ago, which could have forestalled much of the attack, but in many organizations it was likely lost among the blizzard of updates and patches that large corporations and governments strain to manage. The ransomware attack unleashed on Friday has affected more than 100,000 organizations in 150 countries, according to Europe's law enforcement agency Europol on Sunday. From a financial perspective, the attack seems to have been a failure: Bitdefender, a Romania-based security firm, has been monitoring the Bitcoin accounts the ransom was to be paid to and said as of Sunday morning they had only managed to garner $32,213, spokesman Emanuel Marius Buterchi said. A staff member who works at NHS Bury CCG's offices on Silver Street said a virus had infected the computer system. Britain's National Crime Agency said it was aware of the reports of a cyber attack but made no further comment. A large number of hospitals across Britain were hit by a cyber-attack Friday, shutting down their computer systems and forcing the cancellation of patient appointments. (more...)
