She was often locked in the cage at night to keep her from wandering. Since being freed, the woman has been evaluated at a local hospital and placed in the care of the Louisiana Health Department. While a bit morbid, the researchers were able to examine the relationship between dietary fat and overall death, as well as deaths due to cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and respiratory disease. In addition, replacing total fat with carbohydrates was associated with modestly higher mortality. The researchers found that, compared with the same number of calories from carbohydrates, each 5 percent saturated fat intake increase was linked with an 8 percent higher risk of mortality. (more...)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has started a statewide surveillance program to monitor the mosquitoes that spread Zika, and is getting ready to release a plan of action. Cincinnati's first case of the virus was announced less than a week later. According to the CDC , babies with microcephaly often have smaller head sizes and brains that might not have developed properly. (more...)

There have been no reports of Zika being locally transmitted by mosquitoes in Dallas County. Symptoms of Zika can include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. All reported USA cases of Zika have so far involved people who travelled to areas with a current outbreak, but health experts have warned that local transmission cases are likely to occur in the coming weeks during summer mosquito season.
