The Shawnee County Health Department has confirmed someone has tested positive for the zika virus and giving tips to the public on how to protect yourself from the virus. This causes underdevelopment of the brain, which then results in a smaller than normal head. Unfortunately, Zika can't be treated since there is no available vaccine for it yet. (more...)

Experts say containing Zika requires different measures in different countries. Or to the owners of apiaries that were turned into charnel houses, who found in some cases millions of bees dead outside their hives. The recommendation follows a study of 69 Brazilian infants up to 10 months old who were born with both microcephaly and laboratory-confirmed evidence of Zika infection. The hearing loss couldn't be attributed to any other cause. Scientists say Zika should now be considered a risk factor for hearing loss, and children who were exposed during pregnancy but have normal hearing at birth should be screened regularly for delayed or progressive hearing loss.
