Wake Forest coach punched NYC tourist who died from injuries

Wake Forest Assistant Basketball Coach Jamill Jones Charged With Assaulting Man Who Later Died

The Wake Forest basketball coach charged with punching a Florida tourist - who later died at the hospital - could potentially face murder charges after police upgraded the case to a homicide on Friday.

Authorities say Jones punched 35-year-old Sabor Szabo in the face early Sunday morning in Queens after the tourist banged on Jones' auto.

Police arrested Jones, of Kernerville, North Carolina, on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault.

The New York Post, which first reported Jones' arrest, reported that Szabo punched somebody before Jones' alleged assault. Szabo's brother said he thought Szabo may have mistaken an SUV for a cab, according to the New York Daily News.

He's said to be "a rising college basketball coaching star" at Wake Forest University. Authorities said that Jamill Jones punched Sandor Szabo on a Queens street, causing Szabo to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk, after which Jones left the scene.

"The court made the proper ruling with the charges, and the district attorney's office made the proper ruling with the charges", Jones' lawyer, Alain Massena, said.

After he punched Szabo, police say Jones got into an SUV and drove away leaving the man on the pavement. Jones was released on his own recognizance and was ordered to return to court on October 2.

"The Jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Szabo family".

"Sandor was a super outgoing, friendly, and incredibly smart businessman", his employer said.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued.

Szabo, also 35, was taken off life support Tuesday.

NYPD issued a Crime Stoppers alert to help find Jones who later turned himself in with an attorney.
