Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson showdown presents a unique opportunity for golf

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will reportedly face-off in a dream match

An original date of July 3 failed to transpire and ESPN now report the match will take place on Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas, either on Friday, November 23 or Saturday, November 24.

Golfing legend Tiger Woods is favourite for the $10million showdown with Phil Mickelson according to Sportsbet.

Woods and Mickelson could iron out the rest of the details this weekend, as both are competing at the 2018 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which begins Thursday at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

Last month, it emerged the two golfing greats had agreed to play a round of golf one-on-one for what has been reported to be a $10 million purse for the victor.

Additionally, both Woods and Mickelson have agreed to be miked up for the event. It is not clear if the two will put up their own money in the challenge. "No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone".

Mickelson now sits in 10th place of the Ryder Cup standings while Woods is 20th.

"The excitement that's been going on around here, it gets me thinking: 'Why don't we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match?" he said.

Their relationship, frosty in their primes, has thawed in recent years as age and life experiences have brought them closer. "We both like to talk smack, and we both have fun with what we're doing".

The two have been rivals over the years, but have been seen together paired up for practice rounds and sharing spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Woods is contending for one of the four at-large picks.
