Russian Federation makes Steven Seagal special envoy to United States to help thaw relations

Moscow appoints action star Steven Seagal special envoy on Russia-US humanitarian ties

In the ever stranger world of politics, Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced that action movie actor Steven Seagal has been appointed special representative to improve Russian and USA humanitarian ties.

Seagal is an accomplished martial artist - like Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But on Saturday, Russia honoured Seagal again, this time with a position as a special envoy to the United States.

The Russian Foreign Ministry likened Seagal's new role to that of a United Nations goodwill ambassador and said that the actor, who is known for his martial arts prowess, would receive no salary.

But Seagal, star of Under Siege, Above the Law and Hard to Kill has faced criticism for his bromance with the Russian leader.

Seagal became a Russian citizen in 2016.

In 2015, BuzzFeed News reported that two years earlier, Putin had suggested to then-President Barack Obama that he could make Seagal the honorary Russian consul to California and Arizona.

Seagal won't be receiving any payment for doing the job, which the ministry described as "the case of people's diplomacy meeting with traditional diplomacy".

Seagal, who sometimes appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment. Last year, be was banned from Ukraine for five years, apparently because of his support for Putin's policies.

The 66-year-old has called President Putin "one of the great living world leaders", and when Seagal was granted Russian citizenship, said he hoped it would be a symbol of how relations between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation.

The 66-year-old actor was born in Lansing, the capital city of USA state of MI.
