Portugal breaks temperature records amid heatwave

SCORCHER Temperatures could reach 48C this week in parts of Spain

A building heat wave in Portugal and Spain threatens to topple national and all-time high temperature records in a continuation of a series of remarkable heat waves that have roasted the Northern Hemisphere this summer.

Francois Jobard, a forecaster for Meteo France, said the hot air mass from North Africa could cause temperatures in Portugal and Spain of 45C until Saturday and perhaps hotter.

In Greece, forest fires killed at least 90 people.

A continent-wide heatwave in recent weeks has seen drought and wildfires from Greece to Sweden.

"At the moment an high pressure system is bringing very dry and sunny weather across the region and this combined with very warm air moving in from North Africa is allowing heat to build day on day".

Although nowhere near the roasting conditions in southern Europe, the Met Office is still urging people to stay "sun sensible" - drink lots of water and stay out of the sun in the hottest part of the day.

It comes as the heatwave which has hit Ireland and across Europe is expected to continue following more comfortable temperatures this week, with high temperatures expected across the continenent and in parts of the UK.

The map shows the bulge of heat expanding over Portugal and Spain over the weekend before engulfing France and parts of southern England next week.

With nearly no rainfall since May, Sweden experienced its hottest July in more than 250 years, with the drought and high temperatures sparking wildfires across the country, even as far north as the Arctic Circle.

In Spain, authorities issued heat warnings for 41 of the country's 50 provinces as temperatures reached up to 44 degrees.

Homes in Finland are created to handle the extreme cold and damp typical of the Nordic region, not the recent high temperatures.

Summer has bounced back in the United Kingdom after a brief spell of thunderstorms, torrential rain and powerful winds triggered severe weather warnings and wreaked havoc last weekend.

People refreshed themselves on the beach during a hot summer day in Barcelona, Spain, today.

"The highest maximum temperatures on Saturday will be in the Alentejo and Tejo region of Portugal. where 46 or 47C is possible".

The scorching temperature was measured just miles from popular holiday towns of Malaga and Almeria.

A spokesman said: "We'll fry again".

Meanwhile, authorities on both sides of the Baltic Sea, in Sweden and Poland, have warned against swimming due to a huge bloom of toxic algae spreading because of hot temperatures.
