Secretary of State Pompeo Meets with Turkey's Foreign Minister in Singapore

US Pastor Andrew Brunson is seen inside a car escorted by Turkish plain-clothes police officers as he arrives at his house

"The Turks were on notice that the clock had run and it was time for Pastor Brunson to be returned and I hope they'll see this for what it is, a demonstration that we're very serious", Pompeo said.

Pompeo told reporters on the sidelines of an Asian security forum in Singapore that the two countries would continue to work with each other in the framework of the alliance and on other matters.

Their talks came after Washington imposed sanctions on two of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's ministers over the trial of a us pastor accused of backing terrorism.

"The decision, which disrespectfully intervenes in our judicial system, will seriously damage the constructive efforts made in order to resolve problems between the two countries", Ankara's foreign ministry said.

The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan "should seize the Trump Towers", Aytun Ciray, general secretary of the Iyi (Good) Party, said to protest the White House announcement of sanctions on Turkey's interior and justice ministers.

Turkey has said the sanctions are unacceptable.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu have held talks in Singapore on August 3, 2018. The United States has also been seeking the release of three locally employed embassy staff detained in Turkey.

Both Cavusoglu and State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert described the conversation as constructive. "We repeated to them that nothing can be achieved through threatening language and sanctions and we believe that this was well understood", he said.

"We call on the USA administration to walk back from this wrong decision", it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected the USA demands, saying his government won't back down and is willing to "go its own way" if the US acted.

The 50-year-old pastor was arrested in December 2016 and later charged with links to a failed plot to overthrow the Turkish government.

But Brunson's case has resonated with U.S. President Donald Trump and more particularly with Vice President Mike Pence.

The meeting was the first between the countries' officials after Ankara vowed it would respond to sanctions with retaliatory measures.

Mr Erdogan has previously tried to swap him for Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic cleric...
