Google declares its official stance on notches

Google lays down the law on notches so OEMs can’t screw them up

Within these constraints, devices can place cutouts wherever they want.

The point of this whole exercise is so that apps don't have trouble in displaying. As per a latest blog post for developers, Google is making it clear that Android P phones will not have more than two cutouts.

Notches are either the bane of everyones existence, or just a future part of mobile life, at least until manufacturers work out how to incorporate the relevant sensors underneath the display.

Among the other notch-related requirements that are spelled out so that devices with notches don't negatively affect the way apps run, the status bar has to extend to at least the height of the notch in portrait mode.

In a blog post penned to application developers this week, Google laid down a few rules that Android phone manufacturers will need to take into account when designing devices. It has also detailed how developers can make their apps compatible with devices that support display notches. We've reached an impasse with smartphone design, and the camera notch is a good way to add a little more screen. We already know that Android P is expected to offer official operating system-level support for the display notch - also known as a cutout - as well. Apps by default will have to be letterboxed in the landscape mode; although developers can make use of the space around the cutout in landscape mode, with content around the cutout. For that, Android P beta devices with a cutout like the Essential PH-1 are recommended.

"During our user research we have often seen status bars filled with icons on Android devices". Smartphone makers could go that way in the future, leading to smartphones that are filled with entirely unnecessary notches. Whether you love it or hate it, here are eight examples of phones with carved-out front tabs. It's a phone that can compete with the best and launches at a price a bit less than the Galaxy S9 Plus. So far, the most popular solution is a screen cutout.
