WhatsApp group video and voice calling launched

WhatsApp group voice and video calls

The group voice and video calling feature is now rolling out both in the Android and iPhone versions of the app.

In a post on their blog WhatsApp said: "Over the last couple years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp". To recall, group video calling was confirmed by Facebook at its annual F8 conference. While beta users could engage in group calls with non-beta users the former couldn't make calls from their end.

This allows up to four people to chat simultaneously within the app with each person appearing on the screen at the same time.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp on Tuesday officially rolled out its group calling feature for all users on Android and iOS. The firm has extended its end-to-end encryption feature to group calls so you and your group can chat more securely.

In order to start a group call, start a video or voice call with one of the contacts. The procedure to do so is simple: Start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the "Add Participant" button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call. WhatsApp users will now be able to make group calls for audio and video. It's unclear which version of the app is required for group calls, but updating to the latest version is always recommended.

"We believe that these changes - which we'll continue to evaluate - will help keep WhatsApp the way it was created to be: a private messaging app". WhatsApp also promised that the app should work reliably, even with countries with less-than-favourable network conditions.

WhatsApp is the most popular IP-based messaging app worldwide, but it still suffers from feature limitations.
