The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported 32-year-old Jason Gargac of Florissant, Missouri, has given about 700 rides since March and most have been streamed to his channel on the live video website Twitch, where he goes by the username "JustSmurf".
Twitch did not respond to the Post-Dispatch's requests for comment for the story, but said in a statement after publication that the service would remove content in response to complaints from people who say their privacy was violated.
Like other Uber and Lyft drivers who stream their passengers' journeys on Twitch's In Real Life section, he initially informed customers about the livestreams.
Gargac was suspended by Uber on Saturday following a profile report into his behavior by the St Louis Post Dispatch.
"Driver partners are responsible for complying with the law when providing trips, including privacy laws", an Uber spokesman told the Post-Dispatch.
As he operates in Missouri, Gargac's actions are legally sound. And while he may not have technically broken any laws, both Uber and Lyft have suspended Gargac from operating on their respective platforms.
An Uber driver has been suspended after recording hundreds of riders without their permission and streamed the live video online, a report said. People were sometimes named in the videos, the Post-Dispatch said, while homes were also shown. "I didn't like it", he said. I.have nothing more to add here.
"We're really dealing with a law that was developed just during the time of audio recording", Stewart said. If a passenger would notice the camera, Gargac would tell them he was filming for safety reasons instead of letting them know they were being live-streamed.
'This better be content, I swear to God. But the driver faces no legal repercussions for his behavior because Missouri has "one party consent" privacy laws, meaning only one participant in a conversation needs to agree to its being recorded.
Jason Gargac had an audience of thousands and said he tried to "capture the natural interactions between myself and the passengers".
They say they are going to a bar across town, and one of the women tells Gargac she has a crush on a friend she's going to meet.
Apparently, she would help him moderate any Twitch comments that were overtly homophobic and racist, and yet, having users rate women from 1-10 was somehow okay?!
Twitch did not comment on this specific case but, according to ABC News America, said it does not allow people to share content that invades others privicay.
Before it disappeared, Gargac's channel had about 4,500 followers and about 100 subscribers who paid $5 a month to support his broadcasts.
