Angelique Kerber recalls memories of hero Steffi Graf after Wimbledon win

Kerber made Serena look sluggish winning more than 2/3rds of her service points, particularly doing well on the second serve, and also breaking Serena 4 times in the match, compared to just a lone break for Williams.

The left-hander struggled to deal with the added focus a year ago, though, when she failed to win a title and slid from number one to 21 in the rankings.

While the rest of the women's draw saw utter chaos and upsets, Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber have played some of their best tennis to advance to the final at the All England Club. If Serena was good enough to make the finals of Wimbledon with everything going on in her life, she was good enough to win the finals of Wimbledon with everything going on in her life.

Williams and Meghan have been close for years, with the 36-year-old tennis ace attending the royal wedding in May in with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

Williams had been the favourite despite it being only her fourth tournament since giving birth in September.

Kerber was so consistent.

Speaking after the match, Kerber said: 'Serena you are a great person and a champion, you are coming back and you are such an inspiration for everybody, for all of us and every person watching.

Williams endured life-saving surgery after Olympia's hard delivery and serving as an inspiration to mothers all over the world had been part of the former world one's decision to return to tennis.

She kept nagging away at Serena and induced more miscues from the American in the sixth game of the second set. "And to hold this trophy now, it is something that I can't describe".

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said.

However, she was caught on camera looking deflated following Serena's defeat by Angelique.

Serbian star Djokovic toppled Rafael Nadal in a gripping five-set affair, while Anderson overcame John Isner after 50 games in the final set.

The end was nigh for Williams when Kerber hit two thumping forehand winners in game six to break for a 4-2 lead. "It was such an incredible tournament for me". But when Williams steps out on to court at the US Open she will surely be even hungrier and fitter - and, as usual, be the one player her opponents are afraid of most of all.

This is the first time that Meghan and Kate have attended an event together without their husbands Prince William and Prince Harry - and both looked chuffed to enjoy a girls' day out.
