Woman accidentally steals auto for two weeks

The car that the woman originally rented was a Nissan Sentra sedan

A CANADIAN woman "stole" a complete stranger's vehicle following an nearly unbelievable carpark stuff-up.

MacRae says it all started when the woman rented a black Nissan Sentra from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Cornwall on Saturday, June 23. She then drove to a nearby Walmart to do a spot of shopping, which is when she accidentally switched cars, leaving the rental and stealing someone else's ride. The owner of the vehicle she drove away in had left his fob in the auto.

Keyless cars can be operated as long as the key fob is located inside the vehicle, which was the case in this circumstance.

The Infiniti owner came out and found his auto missing so he reported it stolen.

In the end, both the auto rental company and the Infiniti owner retrieved their vehicles and there was a happy ending to the story.

The woman - who police described as being "confused and a wee bit embarrassed herself" - contacted police, explaining that she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks.

Police in Cornwall say the woman made an "honest mistake" when she drove off in a vehicle, mistaking it for the one she had rented. "Once inside, the woman spoke to the manager and commented about how unkempt the inside of the vehicle was and the fact that there was a set of golf clubs in it as well", police said on Facebook. Yes, the cops were involved, but luckily, they chose not to arrest or press charges against the woman. Shortly after, she returned to the parking lot, got into a black vehicle and headed home.

The first clue something was wrong came when she went to return the auto to the rental agency.

This allowed the woman to drive off, completely unaware that it wasn't her rental.

The pair returned to the Walmart parking lot, and the woman took the manager to the spot where she had parked her rental auto - only to find it still sitting there as she had left it. The woman, meanwhile, had unknowingly kept the keys to her rental.

"The Infinity came back as stolen on police systems as reported in June and ... both the auto rental company and the Infiniti owner retrieved their vehicles and there was a happy, and amusing ending to this story". She informed the manager that she wasn't entirely happy with the vehicle.

Police say that both of these cars use key fobs to unlock and start the auto.
