Wimbledon: Novak Djokovic into first semi-final since 2015

Novak Djokovic reveals what was his best match in career

A fuming Novak Djokovic accused the chair umpire of "double standards" before advancing to his first Wimbledon semi-final in three years with a four-set dispatch of Kei Nishikori.

He dispatched Kei Nishikori, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, in two hours and 38 minutes in the last eight at Wimbledon and the inner steel that characterized his previous 12 successes at Grand Slam level has reappeared. Nadal, who's won two of his 17 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon, edged 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 6-7 (7), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a wildly entertaining match that featured diving shots by both and lasted 4 hours, 48 minutes.

Nishikori put up an admirable fight but was not clinical enough to hold back Djokovic's tide-finally collapsing 6-2 with a third break of the set. "You think I ruined the court by tossing the racket two metres behind the baseline?" He made it to the the US Open final a year ago, and he's firmly established himself as a top-10 player.

When Del Potro sent a forehand rifling down the line to take the third set, it seemed Nadal might be following Federer out of the tournament, but the World No.1 recovered superbly to triumph 7-5 6-7 (7/9) 4-6 6-4 6-4 and keep alive his hopes of an 18th Grand Slam title. I feel like I'm peaking at the right time. Early on he was bothered by the glare off the sun, adjusting his serve and then sporting a cap. "I knew how I threw the racquet", he said. "Sometimes that's what you need to, I guess, be more alert on the court".

Novak Djokovic felt he was a different player to the Wimbledon victor of old but comparisons were inevitable on Wednesday as the Serb rolled into the semi-finals for the first time since 2015. "The expectations he's had to deal with for over a decade, 15 years, I mean, at the top of the game, he's able to deal with it so well, which isn't easy". "We were even until the third set when I managed to step up a gear and end up this match really well".

Nishikori went a break up immediately in the fourth set, but that was not the start of a comeback as Djokovic reeled off four games on the spin which helped send him into the last four.

He has also lost all four meetings against the 20-time major victor, failing to win a set off the great Swiss star. "Djokovic is a national hero and I thank him - but support Croatia, how can he not be ashamed?"

"It motivates me to do extremely well here because I don't want to sit here and explain my loss".

"I'm grateful but at the same time trying not to get ahead of myself too much".
