Trump loses 300,000 followers in Twitter purge, Obama nearly 3 million

By contrast, President Donald Trump's Twitter account lost some 300,000 followers and dropped from 54.4 million to 53.1 million followers.

The announcement follows the Washington Post's report last week that Twitter is increasingly cracking down on fake accounts, with the company suspending 70 million accounts between May and June.

Prime Minister Modi, according to socialblade.com, lost 2, 84,746 followers and now has 43.1 million followers.

In January, the New York Times reported on Devumi, a company that sells followers and retweets to anyone who wanted to inflate their social media influence.

A number of sports celebrities have seen their Twitter followings take a dive.

Compared to what some media outlets are reporting other major global political figures lost, Canadian politicians fared relatively well, with most of the top-followed accounts losing between 3,000 and 1,000 followers. He also added that the new protections policy has helped Twitter to prevent more than 50,000 fake signups per day. This change is the social media site's latest move in its war against abusive or fake accounts.

Former US presidentBarack Obama saw a significant drop of almost 400,000 of his 104 million followers.

Katy Perry has maintained her place as the most followed person on Twitter. On Wednesday, Twitter announced that they were performing a "purge", of sorts, which would get rid of frozen or suspicious accounts.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog.

"These sudden changes in account behavior could include Tweeting a large volume of unsolicited replies or mentions, Tweeting misleading links, or if a large number of accounts block the account after mentioning them", it further explained.

"In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in". Even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey lost followers, but he didn't appear upset about it.

On Wednesday, Twitter said it was making the change in order to boost the credibility of follower-count numbers and improve transparency.
