The Blockbuster from 'Last Week Tonight' just closed

During the last five years, locations that operated as licensed franchises were able to continue business under the Blockbuster name, which is how these three locations managed to stay around as long as they did.

For years now in Alaska, announcements have cropped up every few months that another Blockbuster will shut its doors. Its fellow OR stores, in Redmond and Sandy, have closed in recent months.

Bend's Blockbuster looks just like stores from years ago - yellow on the inside and employees sporting blue shirts.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store".

"It's very nostalgic", she said. I can't tell you how much it means to us.

In its report, the Anchorage Daily News confirmed with Border Entertainment, a Texas-based holding company that operated all of Alaska's Blockbuster stores, that closure plans had been in the works before the end of 2017.

He thanked customers in the Facebook post announcing the stores" closure: "Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years.

Kevin Daymude, general manager of the Anchorage store, said the closing of both stores has not only to do with the ending of both leases but also the economy.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and parent firm Dish Network started closing United States stores in 2013.

In April, John Oliver, host of HBO's Last Week Tonight, sent the DeBarr, Anchorage store a significant amount of Russell Crowe memorabilia purchased from the actor's divorce auction, including the jockstrap from the 2005 boxing film Cinderella Man, in a last-ditch bid to keep the store open. The company's North Pole location closed in March, leaving only five locations left at that time.

So, for you Alaskans who still rent physical movies, make sure to head on out to the Anchorage and Fairbanks Blockbusters before they close for good. According to The Oregonian, the stores' manager Kevin Daymude will not offer any rentals beyond Sunday night.
