The Kremlin on Thursday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's description of Germany as a "captive" of Russian Federation due to its energy reliance, saying his statement was part of a U.S. campaign to bully Europe into buying American energy supplies.

Mr Trump said at the residence of the United States ambassador in Brussels "So we're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation and you pay billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very inappropriate".

US President Donald Trump walks in with US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis as they arrive to attend the multilateral meeting of the North Atlantic Council in Brussels, Belgium July 11, 2018. "You tell me, is that appropriate?"

Nord Stream 2 will expand the existing Nord Stream main gas pipeline by linking Russian Federation and Germany via the Baltic seabed, bypassing Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and other Eastern European and Baltic countries.

"President Trump's brazen insults and denigration of one of America's most steadfast allies, Germany, is an embarrassment", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement.

But Perry said America supports open competition and looked forward to Monday's much-anticipated summit between Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

"Nord stream-2", which may not happen if the Europeans will take a rational position in the USA, and common sense will prevail.

Nord Stream II "is an example of European countries supplying funds to Russian Federation, which can be used against the security of Poland", Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said yesterday.

"Regular maintenance is necessary to operate the Nord Stream twin pipeline safely, efficiently and reliably".

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite sided with Trump on Wednesday after his remarks, saying that she views the project "as geopolitical, politically motivated, having no economic justification and also binding hands for some European countries to pursue a free energy policy".

Peskov said Nord Stream 2 will not make Germany, a major buyer of Russian gas, dependent on Russia, and on the contrary it will become a guarantee of stability of gas supplies and "further development of mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields".
