Woolworths recalls savoury rice after listeria outbreak in Europe

Woolworths, which sells food, clothes and homeware, said its product was sourced from Belgium and contained frozen sweetcorn from the Greenyard Factory.

"Food safety is of critical importance to Woolworths and we take all issues regarding the production of our food extremely seriously".

Those who purchased the recalled vegetable products are being offered refunds.

"We are voluntarily recalling this product as a precautionary measure‚ on the global instruction of the Hungarian Food Safety Agency‚" the retailer said in a statement announcing the recall.

Woolworths on Monday removed a product believed to be contaminated with listeria from its shelves.

In South Africa, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi first confirmed the outbreak in December past year.

As of June 4‚038 tons of recalled products have been destroyed by thermal treatment or landfill‚ according to certificates provided by the Department of Environmental Affairs in South Africa.

Listeria in tainted melon killed seven people in Australia earlier this year.

"Listeria may cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and people with low immune systems", the Food Authority said.

For a full list of the recalled frozen vegetables, see the list below.

It has symptoms that are similar to flu, including high temperature, muscle ache, sickness and diarrhoea.

She said: "The best way to prevent listeriosis is to practise good food hygiene". It can lead to sepsis and meningitis (infection and inflammation of membranes surrounding the brain).

"The products affected contain a particularly unsafe strain of listeria and are being recalled as a precautionary measure to ensure consumers are protected, but particularly vulnerable populations", May said.

ALDI (only products with country of origin of Belgium, United Kingdom or Hungary, all other countries not affected) - Market Fare Peas, Carrots and Super Sweet Corn 1kg - National distribution.

"If you are a healthy adult you'd have to eat a lot of frozen vegetables to make you sick because most of the potentially risky bacteria is killed by the acid in your stomach", Mr Kennedy said.
