We left everything out there, says England manager Southgate

Scott Carson looks stunned after his early error

An early goal was not enough to stop Croatia from eliminating England's dream of reaching the final of the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Croatia had been desperately poor, a shadow of the team who carved Argentina apart in the group stage, but started to get a foothold in the game as the match rolled past the hour mark and Luka Modric's influence grew.

Despite the much-vaunted attack of teenager Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, France's defense proved the difference as they shut down Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku and they showed they will be hard to beat on Sunday.

Croatia's Mario Mandzukic scores their second goal in their 2-1 win in their semifinal against England.

He said: "It's nice to be appreciated but it's about the team". In extra-time nobody wanted to be substituted.

England are out of the Fifa World Cup after Croatia fought back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 in extra time in a dramatic semifinal in Moscow. Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford quietly restarted and managed to get into Croatia's box before the referee called them back.

Asked later about his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, he said: "I am just concerned with the team, with success for Croatia".

I haven't been a big fan of Mandzukic in this World Cup and actually thought that he was a weak link before the game started but he turned up when his teammates needed him to give Croatia a crucial lead in the 109th minute.

England scored just five minutes into the match when defender Kieran Trippier beautifully arced a free kick over the wall of Croatian players that nestled into the upper right corner of the Croatian goal. Only Uruguay - who lifted the inaugural title in 1930, and again in 1950 - has a smaller population among all World Cup finalists.

"We were planning to leave, but now we have to stay until Monday", said Sinisa Pavlek, a Croatian living in Germany as he emerged from the stadium with a broad smile on his face. The ball found Mandzukic in stride and he drove a left-footed shot past diving English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. "Get out on the pitch and then talk, that's what we did". "And I don't think after the six or seven weeks we have been together, that we could have given more".

"It´s impossible to say anything to make the players feel better at this moment in time", he said. First of all I'm so proud of this team and staff for giving everything we could over a long period of time together.
