Sen. Baldwin won’t back Trump’s pick for Supreme Court

Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). told a reporter Thursday.

According to The Washington Post, Kavanaugh reported having between $60,000 and $200,000 in debt between three credits cards and a personal loan in 2016 but the debt either was paid off or fell below the required amount to be reported.

If Kavanaugh is confirmed, it would mean a significant shift to the right for the Supreme Court, according to the Judicial Common Space system, a metric developed by political scientists Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin, Jeffrey A. Segal, and Chad Westerland.

McCaskill's campaign spokesman Eric Mee in a statement to The Associated Press said instead of attacking her, Pence should explain why tax changes gave pharmaceutical companies a "massive windfall".

"After reviewing this nominee's record, I know why powerful special interests in Washington selected Judge Brett Kavanaugh to work on the Supreme Court for them, not the people of Wisconsin", she said in the statement.

An appellate judge since 2006, Kavanaugh took part in investigations of former President Bill Clinton, helped former President George W. Bush prevail in the 2000 Florida vote recount battle, and served in the Bush administration before Bush nominated him to the federal bench.

Trump is backing McCaskill's front-runner Republican challenger, Attorney General Josh Hawley.

Some Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have vowed to fight Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court in the Senate.

Some conservatives feared the pro-abortion, moderate Republican would vote against President Donald Trump's nominee to protect Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling that legalized abortion. Rob Portman talk about Kavanaugh's qualifications before a meeting in the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill July 11, 2018 in Washington.

"Senators should probe Judge Kavanaugh carefully to ensure that he will respect basic principles of equality, independence, church-state separation, and civil rights".

The GOP is targeting Democrats up for re-election in states Trump won in 2016 - of which there are 10, not including Sen. Eighty-one percent of Democrats said they did not want Roe overturned, while 41 percent of Republicans said the same.

President Trump's other appointee to the high court, Justice Neil Gorsuch, reported assets in excess of $3.6 million. They are already coming under heavy pressure from Republicans to vote for Kavanaugh.

Republican state Sen. Leah Vukmir said that "Baldwin's obstruction on Judge Kavanaugh's appointment is proof that she'd rather stand with her liberal activist San Francisco donors than uphold the Constitution".

"We have to win over two different sets of senators", said Fallon.
