May 'wobbling' after ministers 'run away': How Europe sees Brexit drama

Theresa May

Simon Dawson - PA Images via Getty Images Jeremy Hunt arrives at the Foreign Office in London after being appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, following Boris Johnson's resignation.

Johnson resigned as the foreign minister, warning that Britain will end up like a colony to the European Union after the government announced plans for a close trading relationship with the bloc after Brexit next year.

In a scathing resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Johnson said that, under her leadership, the United Kingdom was "heading for a semi-Brexit", with the dream of an outward-looking global Britain "dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

More crucially, Mr Johnson is wrong to say that the laws in question were "supported at every level of UK Government". He also said he will "step up the preparations for "no deal" in case the spirit of pragmatism and compromise that we have extended is not reciprocated".

Hunt's post of health secretary has been taken over by culture, media and sport secretary Matt Hancock, as May struggled to keep control of dissenting voices within her top team.

Jeremy Wright, the Attorney General, will replace Hancock, and backbencher Geoffrey Cox will take over his role.

In her response to Johnson, May wrote that she was "sorry and a little surprised" by his move after his apparent support on Friday, when ministers held talks at her country retreat of Chequers and emerged with a "collective" position on Brexit. "That's certainly up to the people, not up to me".

Dominic Raab is the new Brexit Secretary, with Kit Malthouse replacing him as Housing Minister.

That's what Boris Johnson wrote yesterday in his resignation letter. Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister, resigned along with Davis. In her statement to members of Parliament, May acknowledged the splits in her government and the departures of her ministers.

Addressing parliament today, the Prime Minister told MPs: "We do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honouring the result of the referendum".

Shrewsbury and Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski, who is considered one of the Conservative Party's most ardent Brexit supporters, said he had sympathy with the Prime Minister over the difficulties she faces in uniting different views.

Asked if May should remain in power, Trump said "that's up to the people". He said: "I think anyone who is thinking about a potential leadership challenge should go and buy themselves a coffee and think about new ways of supporting the prime minister". May's decision to brief Labour lawmakers on her Brexit plan, an apparent effort to try to count on opposition votes if her own side lets her down, has infuriated euroskeptic Tories.
