Storm Strengthening To Hurricane Off Carolinas As Puerto Rico Faces Storm Beryl

Storm Strengthening To Hurricane Off Carolinas As Puerto Rico Faces Storm Beryl

Located around 200 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, Storm Chris has sustained top winds of 60mph (95kph) according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Sustained winds were around 70 miles per hour at the time of the NHC report, and the storm was stationary.

Meandering off the coast of the Carolinas, Tropical Storm Chris is on the verge of becoming 2018's second hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.

Tropical storm watch was also in effect for Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, St. Barts, Barbados, St. Lucia, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Canada's national forecaster says the Maritimes could be in the path of a tropical storm that formed off the USA coast Sunday morning.

The current Tropical Storm Chris is growing in size and strength as it passes over the warm Gulf Stream waters. The storm could make landfall as a tropical storm early Friday in far northeastern Canada.

The Hurricane Center said environmental conditions could become a little more conducive for regeneration of a tropical cyclone Wednesday night and Thursday when the system is forecast to be near or north of the Bahamas. We may get a break from the widespread afternoon storms Tuesday, but rains are expected to return for the remainder of the week.

"Chris has been almost stationary the past several hours, and little motion is expected during the next day or so", the NHC said.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre will begin to issue regular bulletins on Tropical Storm Chris beginning Monday evening.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello met with his Cabinet and meteorological experts on Sunday to prepare for Beryl's arrival, Rossello's office said in a statement.

Tropical Storm Chris lingers off the Carolina coast.

Before the storms arrived, forecasters warned residents in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that flooding was likely due to the torrential downpours.
