Apple Music Now Has More Paying Subscribers Than Spotify in the US

Major music distributor says Apple Music now has more US paying subscribers than Spotify

The report claimed that Apple Music and Spotify have over 20 million paid subscribers in the United States, with Apple Music "a hair ahead" from rival Spotify.

But let's not quibble over the details: It seems certain that Apple Music and Spotify are basically neck-and-neck at the moment, from a subscriber count in the U.S. And that Apple will surpass Spotify soon, if it hasn't already.

Citing a detailed report from "a US-based, major distributor", Digital Music News claims Apple and Spotify are neck and neck with just over 20 million paid United States subscribers each, with Apple claiming a slight edge for the first time.

It's important to note, however, that Apple is still trailing Spotify when it comes to global subscriptions.

The report also claims that Apple Music's growth is stronger than that of any other on-demand streaming service for music.

What's more troubling for Spotify is that Apple Music subscribers could be more voracious listeners, racking up a combined 170 million streams of Drake's latest album Scorpion, compared to only 132.4 million on Spotify. Spotify, however, still leads outside of the USA, tallying 75 million subscribers as part of its first earnings report in May. But subscriber numbers may not be the only place Spotify is lagging behind Apple. That's no small task, though Apple Music still has a long way to go if it wants to catch up globally.

And sure enough, the worldwide figures for Spotify and Apple Music show a spread that is more in line with what one would expect.
