Samsung’s texting app apparently sent pictures to people’s contacts without permission

How many people received private photos, without alerting the owner, is unknown.

The few reports of this bug indicate that the phones are sending the messages without the app recording any trace of an outgoing message.

"We are aware of the reports regarding this matter and our technical teams are looking into it", a Samsung spokesman told us. Another reported that their device sent photos to their wife.

Samsung Galaxy owners have complained about unauthorized texts and photos being sent out at random from their smartphones through Samsung's Messages app.

They added that they had enabled a setting allowing pictures to be automatically backed-up to Google, and suspected that the leak occurred because of an update to the Samsung Messages app. "Concerned customers are encouraged to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG", Samsung said in a statement. So for Samsung Galaxy users, this means that the best way to now get around the bug is to avoid Samsung Messages entirely or revoke its permission to access your photo gallery. "However, there was record of it [in my] T-Mobile logs".

Some believe the problem stems from the conversion from the SMS messaging protocol to the new RCS (Rich Communication Services) on the native Samsung texting app. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is working on it, but has not pointed to a cause. TechCrunch has also reached out to T-Mobile for comment.

As initially reported by Gizmodo, the problem seems to be happening on Samsung Galaxy Note 8, S9 and S9+ models that use T-Mobile as their carrier.

For those of you looking for a workaround while the company tries to fix the problem, your options appear to be going into your device's app settings and revoking "Samsung Messages' ability to access storage".
