The programme was started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the CGs of India, Sri Lanka, China, South Korea, Nepal, Uzbekistan and others.

Personnel belonging to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police performed yoga at the height of 18,000 feet, while over a thousand navy personnnel are performing asanas on the INS Virat against the view of the Arabian Sea on the occasion of International Yoga Day. Followed by his speech, Consul General also participated in the yoga session and did Sirsasana (Headstand). There may be many leaders, not just in JD (U) but even in opposition parties like the RJD, who practice yoga regularly. It is a passport to health assurance, a key to fitness and wellness.

As millions of yoga enthusiasts stretched and twisted their bodies, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said yoga should not be seen as part of any religious practice.

This date has been selected by PM Modi as in the northern hemisphere and it also marks the day on which Lord Shiva began to impart Yoga for his followers and thus became their first Guru.

The prime minister then performed asanas with the volunteers.

Nitish Kumar, who himself is a regular yoga practitioner and is said to have learnt the ancient practice from noted exponents at the renowned Bihar School of Yoga at Munger, has been critical of the mass yoga drill organized on June 21 every year since 2015.

"We know that Nitish Kumar is a yoga enthusiast". The event attracted the interest of several Saudis and some of them also participated with lots of enthusiasm. "It is a great movement toward making it a truly universal phenomenon". "Yoga is handsome because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving", he said.

"Yoga has become one of the most powerful unifying forces in the world. It is sure to have only positive growth in the days to come".

India's Ambassador to the UAE, Navdeep Singh Suri, told Al Arabiya English that the efforts to promote yoga are definitely a long-term endeavor. Over 500 yoga lovers turned up to take part in over hour-long special yoga workout at the old Indian Embassy premises.

"Today the entire world is celebrating Yoga day".

In his address, the Prime Minister said from Dehradun to Dublin, from Shanghai to Chicago, from Jakarta to Johannesburg, yoga was everywhere. Yoga fosters oneness through oneness, it brings oneness in mind, body and soul.

She added that yoga's incorporation of meditation and breathing can help improve a person's mental well-being.

"I invite you to explore and celebrate yoga wherever you are".

Organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, the theme for this year's celebration of the Day is "Yoga for Peace".

He said the proposal for a International Day for Yoga at the UN was accepted in record time with a majority of nations supporting it.
