United States doctor fired after video of her allegedly berating patient goes viral

ER doctor suspended for mocking black patient suffering anxiety attack: ‘You people come here for drugs’

A Northern California emergency room doctor has been suspended after cell phone video showed the medic seemingly mocking, ridiculing and cursing a patient rushed to her Silicon Valley hospital suffering a severe anxiety attack.

El Camino Hospital notified its medical contractor to permanently remove Dr. Beth Keegstra from its list of emergency room physicians at its facilities, the hospital's CEO Dan Woods said in a statement which also apologized to the patient, 20-year-old Samuel Bardwell.

According to Donald, his son has a history of anxiety attacks and takes Klonopin, a sedative that treats seizures, panic disorder and anxiety. He had not been able to pick up a prescription for two days and had an attack during basketball practice, according to the Mercury News. Bardwell's father, Donald, added in another Facebook post that he believed his son was experiencing Benzodiazepine withdrawal due to not taking Klonopin.

The 20-year-old patient told the network that based on a contentious encounter with Keegstra and the fact that the physician had spoken with a security guard about him, "I already knew from that point, I said, 'Hey Dad, can you please take out your phone?"

More than that, Dr. Keegstra accused Samuel and his father of entering the examination room in order to obtain drugs.

"I'm sorry, sir, you were the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying", the physician is heard in the video telling Bardwell, who apparently lifted his head to acknowledge the doctor. He said the doctor "has been removed from the work schedule, pending further investigation", and the hospital has "expressed our honest apologies and are working directly with the patient on this matter".

"Sit up!" she yells twice as she's spotted pulling the patient by the arm.

Mr Bardwell (right) and his father, Donald (left) were disappointed with the doctor's approach. "I could not move my body. That's why I started the video", he said, adding he held his cellphone at chest-level and was not trying to be surreptitious about videotaping the interaction. In an email to the publication, Vituity spokeswoman Allison Kundu said that Keegstra was further disciplined by being removed from the schedule at the other hospitals where she works. "You want us to wheel you to your house in a gurney?" she says, laughing.

Dr. Keegstra was under contract at the hospital, employed through a company called Vituity.

Bardwell asks for anxiety medication, to which the physician responds by asking if he needed "narcotics". But even if it wasn't a "race thing", that would still be a problem, he said. "They just were not taking care of me from the beginning".

"He can't inhale!" said Keegstra.

The family told ABC that he is considering legal action against the hospital.

On the Facebook video of the incident it appeared Keegstra told the patient he was "full of s**t".

Told Bardwell's father via ABC News, 'In my mind, I don't think she should be practicing medicine at all'.
