Ronaldo primed for likely last shot at World Cup 2018 glory

De Gea demands public apology from Spanish PM

Luis Rubiales, the Spanish FA's newly appointed president, is said to have been angered by the news that Lopetegui was set to replace Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid boss next season.

Lopetegui never lost a game in charge of the national team (14 wins, six draws) but caused controversy earlier this week when he agreed to manage Real Madrid at the conclusion of the World Cup.

"Lopetegui has been a great coach, but we can't accept this behaviour", he added.

"All of the Spanish coaches would like in the future to become national team manager".

'We have been forced to dispense with the national coach, we wish him the best of luck, ' said Rubiales.

New Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has made signing David De Gea from Manchester United his top transfer priority this summer, according to reports in Spain. "It wasn't an easy situation but I think he did the right thing".

And RFEF president Rubiales was understandably livid at a press conference: 'I admire Julen very much, I respect him very much.

The 50-year-old will have barely 48 hours to prepare his team for their opening World Cup match against neighbours and bitter rivals Portugal in Sochi on Friday.

"The federation can not be left out of a negotiation by one of its workers and be informed five minutes before the press release", Rubiales said. "Maybe this is tough now, but in the end it will make us stronger".

Spain has sacked Julen Lopetegui.

"I came from Moscow because this issue is more important, and we had to react".

The Spanish Football Association reportedly believed it would be inappropriate for Lopetegui to continue his tenure, considering he only informed the Spanish FA of dealings with Real just minutes before the official press release from the mega-club.

Rubiales said the players, who Spanish media said had tried to dissuade him from such drastic action, had vowed to give everything for the team.

Spain are in Group B along with Morocco and Portugal.

"It is true that there is very little time to prepare, but the moment is here and we are clear about what we want to achieve", he said.
