Does the United Bid or Morocco hold the advantage?

Christian Pulisic

Hosting a World Cup is a spectacle unlike any other, and in two cycles, the world's biggest competition will return to North America following Wednesday's vote.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after FIFA's congress voted on Wednesday to back the tri-nation joint bid for the tournament.

The joint North American bid defeated the bid of Morocco 134-65, with one vote for "None of the bids".

If we're spitballing, it's hard to imagine the United States being forced to qualify for a World Cup in which it's the predominant host. The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 matches, including the final, scheduled for MetLife Stadium outside New York City.

The vote, in which all FIFA associations were, for the first time, eligible to vote for the host, was cast at the 68th FIFA Congress on the eve of the 2018 edition of the tournament, which begins Thursday with the official opening ceremony. It's not clear how that would work with three countries as co-hosts.

Russian Federation is holding the 2018 tournament, which happens every four years, and we already know that Qatar are hosting the next one in 2022.

The last time the US hosted a World Cup match was in 1994; Mexico first hosted in 1970.

Morocco has tried, and failed, four times before, in votes for the 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 tournaments - it lost out in the latter to South Africa, the only African nation ever to have hosted football's global showpiece.

Canada, Mexico, Morocco and the USA were exempt, while Ghana was absent after the country's government said it had disbanded its football association amid allegations of "widespread" corruption. "We are all united in football", US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said. Instead of a small executive committee making the decision, this time it was done by a vote of FIFA's over 200 member nations.

The 1994 World Cup in the United States set an attendance record that still stands, with almost 3.6 million spectators for only 52 matches. Mexico had hosted the quadrennial tournament twice in 1970 and 1986.

With only about 4 million registered soccer players in the United States out of a population of 330 million, Cordeiro sees the 2026 World Cup as a potential beacon, in addition to being a catalyst for greater expansion.

That, along with the promise of major revenues from North American sponsors and television networks, was appealing to Federation Internationale de Football Association, an organization that has been beset by global corruption scandals, concerns over exorbitant costs related to previous tournaments, and allegations of widespread labor and human rights abuses around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

France, in particular, lobbied behind the scenes for French-speaking Morocco and the bid had the support of most African nations.

Which cities will host the World Cup matches?

Other cities on the list are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Edmonton, Guadalajara, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Monterrey, Montreal, Nashville, New York/NewJersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington, DC. "There is no doubt that World Cup 2026 will elevate the sport of soccer to entirely new levels and Major League Soccer is honored to be a part of this joyous day".
