‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ wins Best Play at Tony Awards

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won the Tony for best play while a revival of the AIDS drama Angels in America was named best play revival and Once On This Island won best musical revival.

Andrew dedicated his award to the LGBTQ community and referenced the case of a bakery that refused to bake a cake for a gay couple.

"We are all scared, and we all belong", Garfield said, accepting his award, with a Twitter-ready declaration.

The Band's Visit's Stachel pointed out his parents in the audience and opened up about how he had hidden his Middle Eastern background growing up. Tragic for those of us who can't afford tickets to his show, but on the plus side, it was significantly shorter than the E Street Band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech. "It's no longer down with Trump, it's F-ck Trump", he said once more this time pumping two fists in the air.

Among those tapped as Tony Awards presenters are Oscar victor Robert DeNiro, Grammy champ Billy Joel and Kennedy Center honoree Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The "deplorables" who voted for Trump probably were not watching the Tony Awards.

Another work by a major American playwright - Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women" - also held a share of the spotlight as two of its three stars, Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf, were honored as best lead actress and best featured actress in a play. To win, "The Band's Visit" prevailed over three brand-name franchises: "Frozen, " "Mean Girls, " and "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical".

In her acceptance speech, telling Tony hopefuls to be true to themselves, Mendez said that when she had first moved to NY, she had been told she would need to change her name. Garfield's early victory allowed the TV broadcast to begin with a familiar face from the movie "Spider-Man", ideal for younger viewers who then got to see both Fey and a scene from her nominated musical, "Mean Girls". To all artists out there, she said: "Just be your true self and the world will take note". The show went on to win best musical revival, beating "My Fair Lady" and "Carousel".

For most of the previous awards season, shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes have acknowledged the issue of sexual misconduct and abuse of power.
