Germany's Merkel calls Trump's G7 slams 'sobering,' 'depressing'

In a flurry of tweets from Air Force One, en route to Singapore for a historic nuclear summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Trump accused the summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of being "very dishonest".

In a press conference Saturday after a contentious G7 meeting, Trudeau said that Canada had been insulted by the Trump administration's tariffs and that his country would go ahead with its own retaliatory measures by July 1. The top Nafta negotiators from the USA and Canada met earlier during the summit, after Trump in the morning complained about what he called the unfair trading practices of his Nafta partners, also including Mexico.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday Russia should also be attending a Group of Seven nations summit, a controversial idea that even Moscow seemed to reject, as he headed for a chilly reception at the meeting in Canada, where other G7 leaders are set to clash with him over trade.

"The president's support for inviting Russian Federation back into the G-7, just after they meddled in the election to support his campaign, will leave millions of Americans with serious questions and suspicions", Schumer said. "The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president". And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace?

White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow, a former television personality who was described by one commentator as an "insufferable Wall Street hack", echoed Navarro's vitriolic rhetoric in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday, calling Trudeau "amateurish" and "sophomoric".

"Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks ... and we refrain particularly from ad hominem attacks when it comes from a close ally", Ms Freeland told reporters in Quebec City.

Trump left the meeting between the world's leading industrialized countries with a warning to US allies, saying that if they don't remove trade barriers with the USA then they will face consequences.

Trump has said he'll use the summit to argue that the other six nations are taking advantage of the United States on trade.

Russian Federation plays an important role in the settlement of crises in Ukraine and Syria, as well as in the process of disarmament across the world, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.

In response, the European Union is preparing new tariffs set to hit United States exports ranging from jeans to bourbon whiskey. Trump said as he departed the White House for the summit in Quebec.

And no wonder, as it appeared to depict the defining confrontation of the weekend's Group of Seven summit, the divide between U.S. President Donald Trump and the rest of the G7 leaders over Mr. Trump's unilateral tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. She also said that Europe will not let itself be "deceived" again.
