Abramovich rejects offer from Britain’s wealthiest man

Chelsea Sir Jim Ratcliffe

The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that Ratcliffe, the founder, chairman and majority owner of chemicals firm Ineos, had offered £2billion to buy the west London club.

The report claims Ratcliffe's offer was just one of a number of approaches which have been rejected, including from China, as reports suggest a fee in excess of £1bn would be required to cause Abramovich to consider ending his 15-year spell at the club.

With doubts over Abramovich's political status, Britain's richest man Jim Ratcliffe has made an approach to take the club of the Russians hands.

As at Friday, June 8, officials of the Premier League side kept mum on the issue, stressing that the club owner remains committed to the football outfit that he bought over a decade ago.

Last month's Sunday Times rich list valued Ratcliffe at £21.05bn, compared to Abramovich's £9.3bn valuation.

'Shelling out £2bn or so would seem like a drop in the ocean for Jim but at the moment he is torn about what to do, ' added a friend of Ratcliffe, who wished not to be identified.

Abramovich coughed out about KSh 18.9 billion in 2003 to buy the Premier League outfit. He has been granted Israeli citizenship, but is only able to visit England for six-months at a time.

Abramovich has had problems with a United Kingdom visa and also shelved the plans for an expansion of Stamford Bridge recently. However, it is understood that Abramovich has no intentions of selling the club.

Known as a supporter of the United Kingdom leaving the EU, Ratcliffe has had his own run-ins with the British Government.

A spokesman for Ineos told Press Association Sport in response to the Mail story: "We can't comment on market rumour or speculation".
