Inés Zorreguieta, sister to Dutch Queen Maxima, dead at 33

PA Royal news Queen Maxima's sister was the youngest child of the late Jorge Zorreguieta

Dutch state-run news agency RVD said the queen was "very shocked and very upset by the news".

The death of 33-year-old Ines Zorreguieta was confirmed Thursday by a person at the prosecutor's office in charge of the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorization to speak to the press. In 2010, while she attended the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Zorreguieta wrote a thesis centered on suicide in order to receive her psychology degree.

Queen Maxima called off state visits for the next week, including a planned trip to the Baltic states. It is intensely sad and heartbreaking news that can hardly be comprehended for those who stay behind.

Queen Máxima has cancelled a string of public engagements following news of the death of her youngest sister, at the age of 33.

Her father, Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta, who served as agriculture minister during Argentina's brutal military dictatorship, died past year in Buenos Aires aged 89.

Ms Zorreguieta was a psychologist who worked for an office on social policies at the president's office. I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this awful loss together.

She was a bridesmaid for her sister's 2002 marriage to then-Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, and goddaughter for the couple's youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

She is said to have worked as a civil servant in Buenos Aires.
