Jutanugarn recovers to win on 4th playoff hole

Sarah Jane Smith comes out of nowhere to take big lead at U.S. Women's Open AP

Without a win in 222 starts on the LPGA Tour since her 2006 debut, 33-year-old Smith still had a decent chance when she started the final round four shots behind Jutanugarn, playing beside her in the final group at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

A four-under front-nine and she led by seven shots with nine holes to go.

Even though she was in a good mood after the third round, Jutanugarn admitted she was exhausted.

"I felt pretty good, " Jutanugarn said about her mood before the shot.

"Honestly I tried to smile", she said.

"On 10 I just didn't feel comfortable to hit the three wood and honestly I shouldn't have hit the three wood, but I did".

Another bogey followed at the 12th.

Thai Wichanee Meechai, a 25-year-old in her second LPGA season, was part of the celebration as well.

So with Kim charging, Luark appealed to the stubborn side of Jutanugarn, the maddening side of her personality that Luark has come to respect as much as he tolerates. Returning to the 18th, Jutanugarn went over the green while Kim found a bunker.

"She needed a higher objective", Nilsson said. "I don't know what the outcome will be, but I know what I'm going to take action on".

"Coming off the back of 77 and 79 at Wentworth last week I never really expected this", Slattery said.

She credited her caddie, and husband, Duane Smith with keeping her calm on the course. Karrie Webb has a fight to make the cut, having played seven holes and is four-over-par for the championship. But her struggles were not over yet.

BRESCIA, Italy (AP) - Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark made a 10-foot putt on the final hole to close with a 7-under 64 and win the Italian Open on Sunday by one shot over home favorite Francesco Molinari. Finding the bunker on her approach to 18, she failed to get up-and-down for par and the collapse was complete. Kim produced a bogey-free 67 to also finish at 277. Jutanugarn shot one-over 73. But as she sailed her 3-wood in to the water on her way to a triple bogey on the first hole of the back nine, it all started to change. "I didn't sleep much last night and I'm really exhausted".

"I was definitely nervous but not like I've been in the past".

Kim wasted no time taking the lead in the playoff. Before going out to watch, Moriya was asked to sum up her little sister's big game. A birdie at the first extra hole, the 14th, gave her a quick advantage.

Ko pulled that shot back at the 16th, but that was the only shot gained during her round as another bogey at the 18th meant she made the turn in one-over par 37. She missed the green long with her third shot and botched a chip to leave herself with a lengthy par attempt. He missed the green from the fairway on the 18th on the first extra hole and had to scramble for par.
