This week at ComputexIntelannounced the limited edition i7-8086K processor, as an homage to the original Intel 8086 which was originally released in 1978. We know that AMD is releasing a new Threadripper 2 model here at Computex, purportedly with 32 cores, and Intel's announcement that it will ship a 28-core model this year is clearly created to steal some of AMD's thunder before its announcement.
The 6-core, 12-thread Core i7-8086K has been built on Intel's 14nm process and offers a base frequency of 4GHz and a "turbo" frequency of 5GHz.
For overclockers, the CPU is unlocked, which means that it can be overclocked to even greater stable speeds depending on the cooling provided to the CPU and power settings. But there was another reveal which is sure to excite performance junkies: Intel is releasing a limited edition anniversary processor that is capable of hitting 5GHz.
Bryant also showcased Intel's new Low Power Display Technology on a Dell XPS 13 laptop, and it could be a real breakthrough for improving battery life on laptops. The countries are: USA, Canada (excluding Quebec), UK, France, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China (excluding Hong Kong). The company has chose to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its 8086 processor by launching its first 5GHz desktop CPU, the aptly titled Core i7-8086K.
The news came on-stage at Computex 2018, where Intel seemed keen to fight back in a CPU battle that's recently returned to being a two horse race thanks to AMD's recent Threadripper chips.
The processor will be available for purchase on June 8, but Intel is also giving away 8,806 of them as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the x86 architecture.
It is also the first Intel processor to deliver up to 5.0 GHz single-core turbo frequency out of the box.
The competition will be opening on Thursday and will only run for 24 hours. One thing we don't know yet is how much the chip will cost, but it certainly won't be cheap.
