VISA card payment system problems hit local shops and services in Wrexham

Visa down

Visa Inc. card transactions couldn't be processed at certain locations in the United Kingdom and Europe on Friday, according to the company. "We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible".

Customers have reported money going missing from accounts when their cards were declined - including one man who lost £10,000 when paying for a auto.

Supermarkets across the United Kingdom went cash-only in response, with the outage lasting into the evening, although Visa debit card users could still withdraw cash from their current accounts via ATMs.

The statement followed an apology on social media, which read: "Our goal is to ensure all Visa cards work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year".

Visa said in a statement that they are experiencing a service disruption. "We are doing our best to help our customers and apologise for any inconvenience".

Around 9pm, Visa suggested that the outage had been fixed and that its payments network ought to be back to normal.

On Friday, Visa acknowledged the disruption in Europe after consumers and businesses complained about payment rejections.

Ultimately, this latest incident highlights the importance of having an alternative payment method with you at all times.

The issue also prevented many European customers from transacting with cash deposited in their bank accounts.

At Home Bargains in the nearby Cityside shopping centre, staff said that the Visa outage had been frustrating for both customers and staff.

"The technical issue we experienced yesterday has been resolved".

Users who only have Visa cards in their wallet are left dealing with long lines at train station ticket counters and limited means of paying for purchases.

The BBC posted a picture of a London supermarket worker standing outside holding a sign reading: "cash only". "We will keep you updated", Visa said in a 5:00 pm update.
