Flights will cover a distance of approximately 9,000nm (16,700km), and travelling time will be up to 18hrs 45min.

SIA will operate the first flight to NY in October 11, 2018.

SIA will initially fly the route three times a week before daily operations start from October 18 when the airline's other A350-900ULR goes into operation.

Singapore Airlines now serves New York JFK daily via Frankfurt.

"Singapore Airlines has always taken pride in pushing the boundaries", says the airline's CEO, Goh Choon Phong.

Singapore Airlines is the only customer till now for Airbus' A350-900ULR, an ultra-long range version of the twin-engine A350 jet. Singapore will deploy its new fleet of next-generation, carbon-composite Airbus A350-900ULR airliners for the flight. Singapore Airlines will launch the world's longest commercial flight on October 11 between Singapore and NY.

It boasts features such as higher ceilings, larger windows, an extra wide body and lighting created to reduce jetlag.

And of course the airline will also bring its renowned in-fight service to the new non-stop routes. Currently, the worlds longest flight is by Qatar Airways and is from Doha, Qatar to Aukland, Australia.

The Singapore Airlines flight will use the long-range Airbus A350-900ULR, which will be configured to carry 161 passengers - 67 in business class and 94 in premium economy.

Singapore Airlines' current routes to the US operate via fifth freedom routes from various European and Asian cities with the exception of the SIN-SFO route.

The current longest flight available from the United Kingdom is Quantas Airways' London Heathrow to Perth offering. The planes will also be used for direct flights to Los Angeles, with more details to be announced later, Singapore Air said.
