Mike Phelan: Jose Mourinho not replacing Rui Faria a gamble

Michael Carrick

"The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager".

Don Balon claim Bale leaving Real Madrid this summer is "well known", which is no surprise given they've linked half the Premier League to the player.

The 35-year old midfielder, who played his last match for the Red Devils at Old Trafford, will make an immediate switch to the coaching team under manager Jose Mourinho, with the upcoming FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday his first assignment.

However, Mike Phelan, who spent five years as an assistant manager to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, mentioned that the 55-year-old could be taking a massive risk regarding his helpers.

"They finished second and could win the FA Cup but let's face it. this is one of the most boring United teams", Redknapp said in his column in the Daily Mail. "As soon as this came up I didn't think twice", he said.

United will have the chance to give their captain the ideal sending off when they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 19.

"I'm there to give my opinion". I am sure he will teach me a few things and we will have some success in the near future, I am certain of that.

'Moving forward I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn't exist.

United do have a couple of academy graduates in Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe, who can slot into the right side of the backline, but judging by Mourinho's experience with youth, the duo could be loaned out for another season at the least to develop their skills. Carrick's 464th appearance for United ended in the 85th minute when he left the game to a huge ovation.

His place in Mourinho's backroom staff had already been confirmed, but the Portuguese's revelations that the midfielder is being groomed for the assistant's role will please the United faithful to no end. It's an incredible place to play football.

"If you want to be positive and respect the effort of everyone and the clear numbers and pragmatic numbers of the improvement, you say all positive things".
