Swiss Police Investigate Fatal Crash, Fire Involving Tesla

Elon Musk says Tesla will be 'thoroughly reorganised'

While a Tesla spokesperson failed to comment following the accident, the company's co-founder Elon Musk took to Twitter to note that it was "super messed up" that the latest accident had garnered so much public attention, while accidents involving traditional cars "get nearly no coverage".

Police in the Salt Lake City suburb of South Jordan said Monday the driver also said in an interview that she was looking at her phone before the accident.

Maybe it's because, according to the company's website, the vehicle is said to be able to sense other cars and objects, change lanes without the driver's input, and self-park. The driver of the Unified fire fix vehicle was checked for injuries related to whiplash but was not taken to the hospital.

The Tesla was traveling at 60 miles per hour when it hit the truck, which was stopped at a light.

There was light rain falling and roads were wet when the crash occurred, police said in a statement.

On 2 May a United States traffic safety regulator contradicted Tesla's claim that the agency had found that its Autopilot technology significantly reduced crashes.

Since the driver was not fully focused on the road, it is unlikely that the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the accident, the newspaper says. If Tesla's safety record applied globally, the company said it would result in 900,000 fewer vehicle fatalities every year and that those driving Teslas equipped with autopilot hardware "are 3.7 times less likely to be involved in a fatal accident". The 18 year-old driver slammed into a concrete wall, and the vehicle burst into flames, trapping the occupants inside. This past March, the agency opened an investigation after a Mountain View, California man crashed into a highway barrier and the auto burst into flames. The driver in that incident died.

Musk said "the probability of an accident with autopilot is just less", and he insisted the vehicle had functioned exactly as it was created to in the California crash. But fears that the former system might not work with drivers of different heights, along with concerns over camera and sensor costs, led to the plans being abandoned, according to the Journal's sources.

"As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission", Musk said in the memo, which was obtained by Jalopnik and confirmed by Tesla to Business Insider.

Back in March, an Uber in self-driving mode hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona.

The investigation into the crash in Utah is ongoing, police said. "And (the Tesla driver) could be facing a citation for failing to maintain control of her vehicle".
