Soros Foundations To Leave Hungary After Anti-Semitic Campaign

Poland's Prime Minister Morawiecki meets his Hungarian counterpart Orban in Warsaw

The foundation run by US-Hungarian billionaire George Soros said Tuesday it was closing its operations in Hungary and relocating to Germany in response to the "repressive" policies of Viktor Orban's government.

Open Society Foundations will move its worldwide operations in Budapest to Berlin in Germany, according to a press release Tuesday. Previously, the Hungarian Prime Minister said that Soros behind mass migration to European countries of North Africa and the Middle East.

Hungarian politicians have repeatedly called in the country to ban the activities of the Soros Foundation, accusing the philanthropist and his Foundation in promoting influx into Hungary of migrants.

"The government of Hungary has denigrated and misrepresented our work and repressed civil society for the sake of political gain, using tactics unprecedented in the history of the European Union", said Patrick Gaspard, president of Open Society Foundations.

The OSF said it would "pursue all available legal avenues to defend the fundamental rights that are threatened by the legislation" and "continue to support the important work of civil society groups in Hungary". Those connected to Open Society have been targeted by clandestine and fraudulent recording efforts aimed at fueling the government's misleading propaganda campaign. The law was termed the "Stop Soros" bill.

The bill would tighten an existing law adopted last June that imposes restrictions on nongovernmental organizations receiving foreign funding.

The campaign was criticized in the Hungarian Jewish community as having anti-Semitic overtones.

Last October, Soros moved $18 billion - the majority of his estimated $24.6 billion fortune - to the Open Society Foundations.

The Open Society Foundation (OSF) backed by Hungarian-born United States billionaire George Soros is moving from Budapest to Berlin, the German public broadcaster DW reported on Tuesday.

OSF said more than 100 OSF staff in Budapest would be affected by the move to Berlin, around 60 percent of whom are Hungarian nationals.
