Paris Saint-Germain appoint Thomas Tuchel as new manager Video

The former Borussia Dortmund boss joins the Parisian club on a two-year contract, PSG announced on Monday.

Tuchel replaces Unai Emery, who ultimately paid the price for failing to utch PSG on to that next plain of superclub elite-dom this season just gone.

Despite being one of the favourites going into this season's Champions League, they succumbed to reigning champions Real Madrid at the last-16 stage - losing 5-2 on aggregate. "I can't wait to start working with all these great players who are all among the best in the world". Conte is still expected to leave the club in the summer with Luis Enrique believed to be the man to step in.

Tuchel will begin his tenure with the capital club after the World Cup in late July, when pre-season preparations begins for the 2018-19 season. "There is tremendous potential in Paris and this is the most exciting challenge that has come to me".

PSG President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, spoke of Tuchel as "one of the most competitive European coaches to have emerged at the highest level in recent years".

"He is strongly imbued with very strong principles of playing spectacular and clinical football that has always been the foundation of German football, especially on the global scene".

"His ambitious personality, his strong taste for attacking football and his strength of character are part of the style we have always sought at Paris St Germain".

"So many things have been positive, and I also take the negative things as it helps in the growing process of the club, but also mine".

This is a unique problem (even Bayern Munich, who are the closest comparison to PSG in terms of domestic dominance, face stiffer competition in the Bundesliga, and their Champions League record perhaps suggests they suffer from the same lack of weekly competition anyway), and its solution is unlikely to be primarily tactical.

Emery will take charge of his final PSG game against Caen this weekend.
