Tiger Woods to play in The Open at Carnoustie

Tiger Woods commits to 2018 British Open at Carnoustie

Pandemonium would ensue for tickets if Woods chose to play.

Woods and Mickelson hope the quality of golf changes, too.

"I didn't hit the ball close enough today", Woods said.

Woods finished with five straight pars to get in at one-under 143 for the week, a total that's likely to make the cut on the number. Mickelson shot an even-par 72, while Woods shot 66 and won the tournament the next day. Everyone saw. Mickelson was eyeing a 54-foot birdie attempt at the time. Everyone was just trying to keep it together.

Woods and Mickelson rarely played together on Thursdays and Fridays in their heyday, with tournament organizers keeping them apart to spread their top talent across the TV schedules. Mickelson had to back off his putt a good 45 seconds later because he was still laughing. "I think he's very close to winning again".

The result was Woods, who has never missed The Players cut in his career, actually found himself in limbo for the next six hours.

"There's trouble on every shot and when you're a little off you get penalised pretty severely here", Woods said. "Kind of midway through the round today there was zero energy out there".

Woods battled afternoon winds during the first round at Florida's famed TPC Sawgrass as he plummeted to two over on the front nine, before steadying the ship with an eagle at the par-5 ninth. Woods was able to two-putt successfully fromm 65 feet, but he hit his drive on the risky 18th hole into the water and had to settle for bogey on that hole.

Woods acknowledged the course setup had plenty of accessible pins for scoring, but one of the all-time best in that category didn't have the game to pull it off even when he was in favorable position. The massive crowd thinned out on the back nine before picking back up at 16, 17 and 18 - the most raucous holes at the Stadium Course. Mickelson has shot a lower round 15 times, Woods 14 times and they have matched scores on three occasions. His chipping was off the charts at the Valspar Championship, where he was fifth in strokes gained around the green. Any chance to gain momentum Friday was lost on missed putts from 10, 8 and 12 feet, respectively, on the 17th, 18th and second holes.

He's capable of doing everything required to win golf tournaments after a multi-year absence.

The third member of the previous champions trio Rickie Fowler may exclusively shoot 74, whereas one other big-name triumvirate to misfire was that of Rory McIlroy (71), Jordan Spieth (75) and Justin Thomas (73).

"Boy, it was nice to turn the round completely around there", he said.

"I think tomorrow will be a little bit different".
