USPS and SCV Food Pantry help "Stamp Out Hunger"

Letter Carrier Olympics 2018

Saturday is the annual Letter Carrier's Stamp Out Hunger, and while they deliver your mail they only ask that you do one thing.

Stamp out Hunger has been feeding people for more than 25 years, and all of the food collected stays in the community to help battle hunger locally, a simple concept that has proved successful.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the second largest food drive of the year for McLennan County. Within the local network, more than 26,500 pounds of food was collected past year.

Volunteers with the SCV Food Pantry collect donations for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive? Since it began in 1993, over 1.6 billion pounds of food have been collected, with 2 million pounds of food going directly to Wichita families.

On Saturday, postal workers across the county will be picking up donations of food for those in need.

The pantry is looking for nonperishable goods, including cereal, peanut butter, pasta and tomato sauce, as well as hygiene items and pet food.

The donations will eventually make their way to the Roadrunner Food Bank, where volunteers will spend the next several months sorting them all out. Donations in non-breakable containers, of non-perishable, unopened and unexpired food items placed in bags by your mail receptacle will be very much appreciated.

Richard Hatzenbuhler says, "It feels great to help out the community".

A year ago the pantry collected 150 pallets of food, according to Howard.

At the end of the day they counted a preliminary total of 69,000 pounds of food, but it's not too late to get involved. Healthy low-sodium, low-sugar items such as oatmeal, other whole grains and canola or olive oil will also be accepted.
