Rooney may snub MLS move if Allardyce leaves Everton

Wayne Rooney is joined by two of his children at Everton’s final home match last weekend at Goodison Park in Liverpool

Wayne Rooney could be set for a remarkable switch to America with DC United.

Rooney would join DC United when the U.S. transfer window opens in July, and Neville insists it would be a beneficial move for the former England captain.

It is understood he will pen a two-year deal, taking him to the end of the 2020 MLS season, which will be confirmed when the American league's transfer window opens on July 10.

The former Manchester United coach insisted that football has been attracting more and more of an audience every year in United States and feels Rooney's iconic status will be a huge shot in the arm for the MLS.

Wayne Rooney is prepared to see out the final year of his contract at Everton if manager Sam Allardyce leaves the club, according to the Mirror.

"But as for clarity as to whether Wayne is staying or going, we'll see later on".

Rooney was reportedly close to moving to MLS at the end of last season, but instead rejoined Everton at the end of a 13-year trophy-laden spell at Manchester United.

It was all downhill from there, sadly, with Rooney's appearances restricted under Allardyce in a reined-in midfield role and his frustrations made public when he was clearly furious to be substituted in the goalless derby draw with Liverpool at Goodison.

Rooney's agents were unavailable for comment while sources at DC United said they did not comment on player speculation. Only when I speak to him today will I find out where the situation lies. Then he's in the Premier League again with Everton, so I think his career in England was ideal.

Rooney, who first burst onto the scene aged just 16 at Everton, is the club's top scorer this season with 11 goals but he has not scored since December 18.
