The country is nominally democratic, but Hun Sen, the longest-ruling leader in Asia, has recently shuttered dissenting news outlets, jailed dozens of critics and dissolved the main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party, or CNRP - apparently with Beijing's blessing. They added the paper's editor-in-chief Kay Kimsong had also been fired.

BANGKOK, May 7 (Reuters) - The purchase of the Phnom Penh Post by a Malaysian whose public relations firm lists Cambodia's long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen as a client is a "disaster" for media freedom ahead of a general election, an worldwide rights group said on Monday.

Supporters of Kem Sokha, former opposition leader and ex-president of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), hold up a poster near the Appeal Court in Phnom Penh, Cambodia Thomson Reuters PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia's Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea for bail by detained opposition leader Kem Sokha, following his arrest past year on charges of seeking to overthrow the government.

"After being ordered to take away my story relating to the sale of the Phnom Penh Put up from the web site by new administration, I refused and provided my resignation, which was accepted", Brendan O'Byrne, the newspaper's former enterprise editor, mentioned on Twitter. "I didn't feel like I could do that in good conscience, so I resigned immediately". Management refused, and Kimsong was sacked shortly after.

More than 20 current and former staff members signed a statement expressing their "disgust" over the new owner's ordering that the story be taken down from the newspaper's website.

Baliga said he "will not be returning to work at the Post".

Journalists at the newspaper said that three other senior editorial staffers had resigned.

Among Sivakumar's complaints against the article were that the reporters forgot to publish his middle initial and that they identified him as "an executive" and "executive director" of Asia PRrather than CEO and managing director.

The paper's main rival, the Cambodia Daily, and dozens of radio stations were shuttered previous year as part of a wider crackdown on critics ahead of 2018 polls that Mr Hun Sen is determined to win.

Ganapathy's company website lists "Cambodia and Hun Sen's entry into the Government seat" as a former "project". "I am devastated at the prospect of not being able to work everyday with the some of best journalists I know".

On Wednesday, Reporters Without Border issued a statement saying Cambodia has dropped 10 places in the World Press Freedom Index, from 132 last year to 142 this year out of 180 countries.

Sam Rainsy, the former leader of the opposition party, who abruptly quit a year ago in the face of government pressure, said that The Post had recently published two of his letters to the editor, but that he did not expect the new management to continue the practice.

Since launching in January 2007, the Cambodia-based Southeast Asia Globe has sought to "engage our readers through reports that dig deeper and stories that inspire".
