Walmart Announces New Measures to Cut Opioid Abuse

Walmart tightening its opioid policies

Earlier this year, the company announced free opioid medication disposal in all its USA pharmacies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that emergency room visits connected with suspected opioid overdoses rose nearly 30 percent in September from July 2016.

The company also said that as of January 1, 2020, Walmart and Sam's Club will require e-prescriptions for controlled substances.

They said that e-prescriptions are proven to be less prone to errors and cannot be altered or copied, and they can be tracked electronically.

Walmart Inc. announced that changes will be made to its opioid prescription policies to help curb abuse and misuse.

USA Today reports Walmart and Sam's Club pharmacies will also comply with laws in some states requiring opioid supplies to last less than a week. Now, pharmacists can also counsel patients on how to use DisposeRx and distribute an opioid awareness brochure outlining risks and helpful resources.

In states allowing access, the company's pharmacists will have access to and use the controlled-substance tracking tool, which helps pharmacists make dispensing decisions and provides real-time interstate visibility. As a result, Walmart will implement new opioid training for its expansive roster of pharmacists.

"We are doing actions in the struggle the world's same-sex outbreak", mary beth Hays, executive vice president of U.S. Walmart's Consumables, Health & Wellness, said.

While experts agree that safe disposal of leftover opioid drugs is an important measure to fight the epidemic, they point out that plenty of options for the safe tossing of painkillers already exist.

Florida's law, which was passed this year as part of a larger bill, puts a three-day limit on opioids prescribed for patients with acute pain. Walmart continues to be a leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity.
