The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has kicked off its "Fight the Bite" campaign to draw attention to the importance of taking measures to reduce the risk of acquiring tick- and mosquito-borne diseases.

The Centers for Disease Control say tick-borne illnesses have tripled in the USA and Wisconsin is among the states with the most reported cases of these diseases. Its most notable epidemic during 2004-2016 occurred in 2012, in Dallas County, Texas.

The spike in the number of illnesses transmitted by biting insects can likely be attributed to a few factors, CDC researchers said.

West Nile virus was the most commonly transmitted mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S., with its most notable epidemic occurring in 2012, especially in Texas.

Pennsylvania leads the nation in Lyme disease with over 7,000 cases reported in 2015.

According to the CDC, diseases from mosquito and tick bites happen in every USA state and territory. Its latest "Vital Signs" report explains that reported cases of insect-borne disease like dengue, Zika, and Lyme have soared from 27,000 in 2004 to 96,000 in 2016. This is CDC's first summary collectively examining data trends for all nationally notifiable diseases caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, tick, or flea.

The report explains that these vectors or insects are capable of carrying and transmitting pathogenic organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. The CDC also says that seven new tick-borne germs that can affect people were found during the same time period.

Another reason he said scientists believe the disease is growing is climate change.

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) seconded that conclusion, calling for more federal funding of research into the development of new vaccines to battle these diseases.

"At the wildlife sanctuary itself we don't have a lot of problems with ticks because our soils are so wet", says Bay Beach Wildlife director Mike Reed.

Supporting five regional centers of excellence to address emerging diseases from mosquitoes and ticks. Overseas travel and commerce are also increasingly common, and someone infected with a mosquito-borne disease like Zika in one country can unknowingly transport it home.

Cohen, who was not involved in the report went on to offer more ideas about Lyme disease and Zika infection, which have attracted great attention in the US.

"We've seen an increase here in Vermont over the last couple of years in tick-borne diseases in particular".

"When I was a young man, we didn't worry about mosquitos, other than they were a nuisance", Meals, who has a fully gray head of hair and beard, said.
