CDC reports one death from E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce

A doctor shares tips on how people can take precautions against the E. Coli outbreak

Most of the illnesses in this outbreak are not linked to romaine lettuce from this farm, and are associated with chopped romaine lettuce.

In the United States, romaine harvesting usually shifts north to California at this time of year, but federal officials have said they can't guarantee there are no more products now coming out of the Yuma growing region.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 23 more cases were reported since Friday, bringing the total to 121.

Almost half of those reporting illness, 52, have been hospitalized, which is a higher-than-usual hospitalization rate.

USA health authorities on Wednesday reported the first death in an outbreak of E.coli bacteria in romaine lettuce that has sickened 121 people across the United States.

The CDC also added Kentucky, Massachusetts and Utah to the states with reported cases.

The CDC urges people not to eat romaine lettuce unless it can be confirmed it didn't come from the Yuma region.

"Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe", the CDC said. One Arizona farm has been linked to E. coli in whole head romaine, but at least two dozen locations are under investigation. Hemolytic uremic syndrome cause cause fatigue, fever, decreased urination, and unusual bruising or bleeding.

Fifty-two people out of the 102 cases with available information have been hospitalized - an unusually high hospitalization rate of 51 percent. Pennsylvania has reported 20 cases, and Idaho 11; no other state has reported more than eight.

As previously reported, data indicates that the contaminated romaine lettuce originated from the Yuma, AZ, growing region. "This includes salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce", says the CDC. The first illnesses occurred in March, and the most recent began on April 21, the CDC said. This strain of E. coli is especially virulent, hospitalizing 43% of those infected.
