Snapchat Unveils New Glasses Line

The new pair comes with different colors too: black, red and blue. This time, they can also take still photos - with a 1642 pixel resolution, 50% higher than the videos shot by the previous version - and they can shoot underwater.

In total 16 analysts cover Snap Inc (NYSE:SNAP). The company purportedly only sold roughly 150,000 units and lost $40 million United States dollars as a result. The design tweaks - such as the smaller size and slightly more subdued colors - could make them more appealing to wear regularly. Whether increasing the price of the glasses was the right move will only be proven over time, but I'm pretty sure no one is actually a fan of paying more for something they might not even ultimately use.

Snapchat shares galloped 35 cents, or 2.4%, to $14.89.

As for the financial shortfall of the first version, the company attributes that to the business model, rather than product popularity. Snap's V2 Spectacles double-down on the company's original vision without acknowledging that perhaps there was a fundamental reason they didn't sell as well as they had expected in the first place.

The company has reused part of its unsold inventories for the second generation Spectacles which is not exactly a bad idea considering how many were just sitting around in a warehouse.

It's arguable that Spectacles provide a fun and trendy-ish way for Snapchat to differentiate itself from Instagram.

The first refinement was to create a slimmer design.

Spectacles are a pair of camera glasses. (Although the upload process is still reportedly clunky.) The second-generation Spectacles themselves are also now safe to be submerged for short periods of time, and its charger (its bright yellow case) is also splash-proof. A single tap on the Spectacles' button will start recording. Plus the content transfers much faster. The case, which also doubles as a charger, is also splash proof.

Now available in ruby, onyx and sapphire models, the new camera-toting specs will now let you take photos as well as record video. They'll be available May 3rd in the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Spain, Italy, and Ireland.
